Summit County Enters Stage Two With Fire Restrictions Beginning June 26, 2026 at 12:01 am

Effective Friday, June 26, 2026 at 12:01 a.m., Summit County will move to Stage 2 Fire Restrictions due to increasing wildfire danger throughout the region.

The restrictions apply throughout Summit County, including Breckenridge, Blue River, Dillon, Frisco, Silverthorne, Keystone, Copper Mountain, and surrounding unincorporated areas. They are intended to reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires during an exceptionally dry start to the summer.

Whether you're a full-time resident, second homeowner, or visiting the mountains, it's important to understand what is and isn't allowed under Stage 2 restrictions.

What Is Allowed?

Under Stage 2 Fire Restrictions, liquid or gas-fueled devices equipped with an on/off switch remain permitted, including:

  • Gas grills

  • Gas stoves

  • Propane fire pits and fire tables

  • Gas lanterns

These devices must be operated at least three feet away from combustible materials and used safely.

What's Prohibited?

Stage 2 restrictions prohibit many activities that could create sparks or open flames, including:

  • Campfires and all open fires

  • Wood-burning fire pits and charcoal grills

  • Smoking outdoors (except inside enclosed vehicles or buildings)

  • Fireworks, exploding targets, and tracer ammunition

  • Sky lanterns

  • Burning trash

  • Welding, grinding, blasting, and torch work involving open flames

  • Operating chainsaws without an approved spark arrestor

  • Hot air balloons

Additionally, the Summit County Shooting Range is closed while Stage 2 restrictions remain in effect.

These restrictions also apply to many activities on private residential properties, not just public lands.

Why Are Restrictions Increasing?

Summit County has experienced continued dry conditions and elevated wildfire danger. Local agencies continually monitor weather patterns, vegetation moisture, and fire behavior before implementing restrictions designed to reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires.

Protecting our forests, neighborhoods, and mountain communities requires everyone's cooperation.
