Town of Dillon Implements Mandatory Outdoor Water Restrictions for 2026
The Town of Dillon has implemented mandatory outdoor water restrictions effective May 1, 2026, in response to severe drought conditions, record-low snowpack, and concerns about the long-term reliability of the community's water supply.
According to the Town, below-average winter precipitation, unusually warm spring temperatures, and the lowest snowpack levels ever recorded as of April have significantly impacted local water resources. As a result, Dillon Town Council approved mandatory conservation measures that will remain in effect until rescinded.
What Property Owners Need to Know
The new restrictions primarily affect outdoor irrigation and watering schedules for residential and commercial properties throughout Dillon.
Watering Schedule
Outdoor irrigation is now limited to two days per week based on the last whole number of your property address:
Even-numbered addresses
Tuesdays and Thursdays
Between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m.
Odd-numbered addresses
Wednesdays and Fridays
Between 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m.
The overnight watering schedule is designed to reduce evaporation and improve irrigation efficiency.
Additional Restrictions
The Town has also implemented several additional outdoor water conservation measures:
Washing sidewalks, driveways, and patios is prohibited except when necessary for health or safety reasons.
Vehicle washing is only permitted using a bucket, a hose equipped with an automatic shut-off nozzle, or at a commercial car wash facility.
All hoses and manual watering devices must be equipped with a functional shut-off nozzle.
Exemptions
Certain outdoor water uses remain permitted, including:
Hand watering of flowers, gardens, trees, and ornamental plants.
Drip irrigation systems.
Irrigation system testing, maintenance, and repairs.
Newly installed sod, seed, or landscaping that receives an approved temporary exemption.
Emergency response activities.
Potential for Additional Restrictions
The Town has indicated that if stream flows in Straight Creek continue to decline, officials may implement even stricter measures, including the possibility of temporarily prohibiting nearly all outdoor water use.
Enforcement and Fines
The Town is taking an education-first approach during the initial rollout.
During the month of May, violations will generally result in written warnings. Beginning June 1, 2026, fines may be assessed for violations in accordance with Dillon Municipal Code.
Water Conservation Matters in Summit County
Water is one of Summit County's most important resources, supporting residents, businesses, recreation, firefighting, and the overall health of our mountain communities.
While these restrictions may require some adjustments for homeowners and HOA-managed properties, they are intended to help preserve the region's water supply during an exceptionally dry year.
The Town of Dillon has also published several recommendations for improving irrigation efficiency, including watering during cooler hours, adjusting sprinkler heads to eliminate overspray, improving soil health, and mowing grass at a higher height to reduce water demand.
